For this week, I thought I would try something different. As a woman on Wall Street, I have had to hold my own and go over and beyond what my male colleagues had to in order to prove myself. But it has been to my benefit and I have cherished every experience I have had working on Wall Street, because I knew early on that finance was one my passions. And as time has gone on, more and more women are entering the field of finance, which is a great milestone to celebrate.
In particular, I also wanted to share with you one experience that had a profound impact on me.
Have you heard of the Fearless Girl? Do you recognize this image?
Wall Street has historically been associated with males and encompasses what is typically known as male-type language - "there is blood on the streets,""bull market," "bear market," etc. The image of the bull here symbolizes Wall Street and is in downtown Manhattan. I used to walk by it everyday for years on my way to work.
In March 2017, a bronze sculpture of a young girl facing the bull head-on was installed. And I LOVED IT. The young girl stands for female empowerment and was installed in anticipation of International Women's Day.
In 2018, she was permanently moved to face the New York Stock Exchange, also in downtown Manhattan.
As a women in finance who has - on multiple occasions - been the only woman in the room or even on a team, the Fearless Girl continues to inspire and motivate me that I CAN DO IT. Not only that, but it reminds me that I know more than most men out there and that I can (and do) hold my own, especially in finance. And really in any endeavor that I choose.
Today, the Fearless Girl gives women inspiration to continue to chart their own paths and to stand up for what they believe in. To us, teaching women how to invest is critically important as women must have financial independence and freedom.
And it is not only women who are inspired by the Fearless Girl. Men should also feel inspired to support their wives, sisters, mothers, aunts, daughters, nieces - in their journey for financial freedom. Because when women are financially independent, society as a whole is empowered.
And that is our mission. To teach women, and men, how to empower women especially to be financially independent, to take control of their financial futures and to hold their own. We thank you for your support in our journey and in helping us to build the SHALnCO community.
