The Invisible Gap: Why Women Retire with Less...
Share

Despite earning more degrees, living longer, and managing more household financial decisions, women consistently retire with far less wealth than men. We explore the underlying reasons behind the retirement gap—and provide real, practical steps to close it.

We talk a lot about pay gaps, but the real crisis shows up at the end of the road.

By the time retirement arrives, women retire with 30% to 50% less wealth than men—even when accounting for similar career paths and education levels. The median 401(k) balance for women aged 60–69 is just $36,000. For men, it’s over $120,000 (Vanguard, 2023).

That shortfall isn’t just a statistic. It means fewer choices. More dependency. And a fragile financial life at a time when stability should be the reward for decades of work.

Let’s be clear: this is not because women are irresponsible or less capable. It’s the cumulative effect of an invisible web of factors—some structural, some cultural, and some deeply personal.

But there is a way forward. A clear, bold, and evidence-backed path for women to secure their retirement, reclaim their power, and rewrite the narrative.
